1/3 of phones are replaced when the battery dies – but our charging habits are what’s doing the damage.

Around one-third of smartphones are replaced because their batteries degrade, not because the devices are technically outdated. Most users unknowingly shorten their battery lifespan by charging to 100%, leaving devices plugged in overnight or repeatedly topping up throughout the day. To address this issue, we partnered with Liion Power on battery life extender development, designing and manufacturing Leo - a compact device that improves long-term battery health by intelligently adjusting charging patterns. Leo works with USB-C chargers and monitors how your devices charge. Acting as a battery longevity module, it optimises the charging process to reduce stress on the battery and slow down degradation over time.

Tackling planned obsolescence for a sustainable future.

Planned obsolescence drives unnecessary device turnover and contributes to global electronic waste. Leo was created to address this problem by helping users charge more responsibly without changing their habits. Instead of relying on manual interventions, Leo analyses charging behaviour and functions as a battery efficiency controller, automatically reducing battery strain and ultimately extending the usable life of phones, headphones and other USB-C devices. The goal was clear: design a simple, intuitive accessory that enables sustainable charging and helps consumers keep their devices in use for longer.

the Outcome

Communicating function with form.

The industrial design of Leo communicates what the device does internally. The two intersecting lines reference the flow of energy being regulated inside the product: chaotic current entering from one side, stabilised and delivered to the device on the other. The result is a clean, compact form that visually reinforces Leo’s purpose, controlling energy flow to protect battery health. Through close collaboration with Liion Power, Pilotfish delivered an aesthetically refined, manufacturable product that supports more sustainable electronics usage and empowers users to improve the lifespan of their everyday devices.
